Di Carmichael: November 2 1926 - October 2 2010

It is with great sadness that we must share the news that beloved member
Di Carmichael passed away on Saturday morning,
the 2nd of October at Riverside Manor.

Di Carmichael had an infectious passion for painting,
and enjoyed sharing her vast artistic knowledge.
She leaves behind a weighty legacy, and a store of happy memories
with all the artists she has mentored over the years.
She will be sorely missed.

Di received comprehensive fine art training in England. Initially she was engaged in a design and manufacturing capacity and then moved on to teach art up to 'A' level standard. She opened her own studio first in Rhodesia and then in Johannesburg. Diana studied print making for six years with Phillipa Hobbs, specialising in intricately detailed dry point etching of natural history subjects, completed a short course with John Moore concentrating on woodcut, and recently was studying oils with Cyril Coetzee. Diana has had considerable success in botanical painting and has studied with Jenny Phillips, Siriol Sherlock, Katie Lee and Ann-Marie Evans and has won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Kirstenbosch Biennale.

In 2007 her work was selected for inclusion in the 'Highgrove Florilegium' presently being created under the umbrella of the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation, which celebrates and records in a permanent way, the flora in the garden of Highgrove.

Diana was an active member of the Botanical Artist's Association of Southern Africa, the Miniature Association of South Africa and had recently joined the American Botanical Artists' Association.

In 2008 Diana's work was shown in the Natural History Exhibition of the New York State Museum which they then purchased. A small collection of her insect paintings was included in the Oppenheimer Exhibition in March 2008.

Her most recent achievement was to have work chosen to be exhibited by the Hunt Institute for their 13th International Exhibition of Botanical Art and Illustration which is currently running until the 17th of December 2010 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
