In Memoriam: Dr Millicent Frean, 1927 – 2010

Dr Millicent Frean, 1927 – 2010

We are sad to inform you that Millicent Frean died peacefully in Johannesburg on Saturday 10th April 2010, after a sudden deterioration in her illness. She was 83.

Millicent matriculated from Parktown High School at 15 and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a B.SC at 18.
She also gained a teaching diploma; a dental diploma from Guy’s University, London; trained as an Electron Microscopist and ran the E.M. Unit at the Medical School in Johannesburg; earned her PhD and lectured in the Department of Botany at the University of Johannesburg for seven years.

In her youth, she was the South African Breast-stroke champion for 2 years and swam daily all her life.

In 1993 she took up botanical art, with lessons with her long standing friend Barbara Pike. She was a member of BAASA from its inception and participated in many of their exhibitions. She will be sorely missed for her wonderful sense of humour.

She is survived by her husband, 2 sons and a daughter.
