Botanical Art Workshop by Vicki Thomas at Hermanus FynArts Festival

Vicki Thomas will be giving a Botanical Art Workshop at the Hermanus FynArts Festival.

Where better to sign up for a 3-day hands-on course of botanical illustration than in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

Vicki, a founder member of the Botanical Artists' Association of Southern Africa, is a regular guest lecturer in botanical illustration at Stellenbosch and has taught several courses at the UCT Summer School. She has given talks around South Africa and in the UK.

Her artwork is in collections around the world, including the prestigious Highgrove Florilegium, a permanent record of the flora in HRH Prince Charles's garden in England; the Shirley Sherwood gallery of Botanical Art at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as well as in important botanical art exhibitions in the USA, Japan, the UK, the USA and South Africa.

The course fee of R450/day includes a light lunch, teas and coffees.

Polychrome Pencil Crayon Workshop by Heila Topp

On the 16th of March Heila Topp presented an enlightening workshop at the Durban Botanical Gardens on the use of Polychrome Pencil Crayons. For those of us that are unfamiliar with this medium it was inspiring to see what can be achieved. Heila even mentioned that she is now venturing on to creating portraits using pencil crayons and that the results are quite beautiful... Heila has a succinct and encouraging way of teaching which I personally found motivating and this was evident in some of the extraordinary works of art that transpired that day... I only regret not having taken some pictures to post here! Thankfully, Jenny Stevenson took a few snaps of Heila's work which are shown below. They are even more lovely when seen up close!
